The Cathedral of Reims

 

On 6 May 2011, the Cathedral of Reims celebrates the eight hundredth anniversary of its construction. On the evening of the anniversary was opened the show of lights that can appreciate Notre Dame in the colors of origin. A masterpiece of Gothic architecture, crowning place of kings of France is one of the earliest monuments inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage Site. For Victor Hugo, was "of all, the most beautiful." In fact the effect is the cathedral of Reims is amazing how a mountain of stone and glass. Its construction, begun probably in 1211, led to three centuries of work. Decorated with 2303sculptural motifs, the cathedral of Reims is the sole possessor angels with outspread wings. The richness of the sculpture of Reims Cathedral is renowned. No artist had ever been able to donate as much life into the sculpture. The famous stained glass windows were made mostly in the thirteenth century. Reims is the cathedral of coronations. Twenty-nine kings of France were crowned in Reims, between 1027 and 1825, the first building or in the Carolingian cathedral. The most famous kings of the Middle Ages: Philip II Augustus,Louis IX, Saint-Louis, Philip IV the Fair, Charles VII, of the Renaissance, Francis I, the classical period: Louis XIII, Louis XIV, Louis XV, Louis XVI and the 'last king of the Bourbon Restoration: Charles X. After being blessed by the Archbishop of May 6, 1211 Reims Cathedral has always been a witness of French History. September 19, 1914 burned and bombed for four years, the cathedral was badly damaged. In July 1962, deGaulle and Chancellor Adenauer have sealed, in Reims, the reconciliation between France and Germany.
